Positive Coaching Alliance Workshops

Working in conjunction with the Positive Coaching Alliance, the IYSC regularly puts on workshops for Coaches, Athletes, and Parents to further the goal of providing young athletes in Idaho with a well-rounded, positive experience with athletics.

Better Athletes. Better People.

Each of our presenters goes through training and immerses themselves in the principles of the Positive Coaching Alliance, seeking to spread the message that the ideals put forth by the PCA (and the IYSC) not only improve an athlete’s individual experiences in sports, but translate to real progress in competition as well. Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, Doc Rivers, and many other coaches and players at the highest levels of sports embrace and promote the teachings of the Positive Coaching Alliance, and the IYSC is proud to bring those workshops to Idaho.

Meet a few of our presenters below.

Jon Ruzicka

Jon was a three sport athlete in high school, participating in football, basketball, and track. He went on to play college football at Boise State University. Jon first taught at Centennial High School where he coached football, basketball, and track. In 1998 he moved into administration and served as Principal at Capital High School.

Greg Patton

Greg turned Boise State into a national tennis power when he arrived in 1993. He led BSU to 16 NCAA tournaments and has been honored with the NCAA National Coach of the Year award at two different institutions posting an impressive 808-111 record as collegiate head coach. Coach Patton has been elected to four hall of fames: UC-Irvine Athletic Hall of Fame (2000), Boise State Athletic Hall of Fame (2001), Idaho Tennis Association Hall of Fame (2013), and USTA Region Hall of Fame (2015).

Sam Kristensen

Sam has worked for more than 13 years as a high school counselor, high school athletic director, and high school basketball coach. Prior to a career in education, Sam was an outfielder and all-conference baseball player at the University of Redlands in California. Sam is a USAT All-American triathlete, and a USAT traithlon coach with athletes in multiple states. He is the founder of Playing for a Purpose, an organization that contributes to the greater good in sports beyond the performances and the scoreboard. Sam and in wife Tara live in Boise with their two children.

Dr. Howard Gauthier

Howard has over 26 years of college experience as an athletic director and men’s basketball coach. During his five-year tenure as athletic director at Idaho State University, Gauthier led the ISU athletics department to their most successful season in the history of the institution. He now serves as Associate Professor at Idaho State University where he teaches sports leadership, sports management, sports finance, and philosophy of sport. He and his wife Karen have one daughter Ali, and live in Meridian, Idaho. Howard recently published his second book, “The Positive Leader.”
